VFD control cabinet vs soft starter cabinet: what’s the difference and which do I need?

Both reduce motor starting impact, but they have completely different working principles, functions and application scenarios.

  • Working principle difference
    • Soft starter: Adopts thyristor phase-controlled voltage regulation technology. It gradually increases the output voltage during startup until the motor reaches rated speed, then switches to bypass contactor for direct grid operation. It only controls the start-stop process and cannot adjust speed.
    • VFD: Adopts AC-DC-AC conversion, changing both output voltage and frequency to continuously adjust motor speed throughout operation. It participates in the whole operation process, providing both start-stop control and speed regulation for energy saving.
  • Performance comparison
    • Starting performance: Soft starter limits starting current to 2–4 times rated, but starting torque decreases with the square of voltage. VFD with vector control can provide 150% rated torque at startup, with starting current less than rated current, offering stronger heavy-duty starting capability.
    • Speed regulation: Soft starter has no speed regulation function; VFD provides 0–100% stepless speed regulation with high precision.
    • Energy saving: Soft starter only reduces impact during startup, no energy saving during operation. VFD saves 20%–50% energy for variable-torque loads such as fans and pumps.
    • Cost: Soft starter cabinets cost 30%–60% of VFD cabinets of the same power.
  • Selection guide
    • Choose soft starter: When you only need smooth starting, reduce grid impact and protect mechanical equipment, no speed regulation needed — e.g. crushers, conveyors, compressors.
    • Choose VFD: When you need speed regulation for energy saving, closed-loop control (constant pressure / constant flow / constant temperature) or process speed adjustment — e.g. water pumps, fans, production lines.
